The much awaited 24 hour news channel from South Africa, eNews, was finally launched on 1 June and it was not a bad showing at all. The set they are broadcasting from looks very elegant and in line with other world leading news sets. The launch was on a Sunday when there was not much news to report on; I think they ran with two main stories that night, one being about the xenophobia in South Africa which seems to be dominating all news stations in the country.

The digital and graphic effects on eNews are great, definitely much better than what we had seen in the past on news broadcasts in South Africa. But my biggest complaint about the eNews channel is that; it is meant to be a South African channel, why then go ahead and get presenters who are not South African? eNews are said to be based on the Sky News model, but I do not see any non British presenters on Sky News. For example the guy presenting the weather for the eNews channel, surely they could have found a South African capable of doing that job.

I just don’t get it at times, South Africa speaks a great deal about bettering ourselves but when opportunities arise for us to showcase ourselves we go out and seek the services of a foreigner. Yes there are some situations where a foreigner maybe the best candidate for the job, for example Santana coaching Bafana Bafana, but surely reporting on the weather is not rocket science!

    4. Vicky says:

I love the weather, the graphics are great and the weather presenter is full of energy!

    5. Lourens says:

Such negative comments on a refreshingly professional weather presentation is not really warranted. The entire show (weather and news) is in a league of its own when compared to local channels. Well done to E News for a professional presentation – may you grow from strength to strength and may you provide ordinary South Africans with unbiased news coverage that informs.

    6. glenn says:

What a disappointment! Cut out all the useless fillers and give us the promised AFRICAN view on news items not just a copy of CNN & BBC

    7. Dave says:

Why dont the team elaborate on some of the lesser news articles.. Ie.. Some of the by lines r of interest 2..more detail on stories too

i just wanna say that crazy kid in krugersdoorp is a moron and is just using the “satan told me to” as a excuse he is old enough to know what he is doing. people must stop blaming metal music.Metal music does not kill people people kill people the world needs to realise that they are just looking for a excuse to make the metal community look bad.

    9. Shelby says:

It is Sunday Afternoon and I have been trying for 4 hours to get hold of someone from your news channel to report a devastating fire in the Cradle of Humankind are in Gauteng. Every single resident in the area has lost something including livestock, homes, grazing ground. We tried in vein to get hold of emergancy services but to no avail. Im am so disgusted and disappointed

    10. DvD says:

Ya come on, Derek van Dam is great. He provides a nice refreshing take on the weather. Kinda like that Irish girl on Sky New – she makes a boring subject interesting!

Plus, we need some foreigners in this country!

    11. PP says:

      Racism at rygby

What a load of bulldust. The media is trying to make something out of nothing-like always.

Why is it that whenever something happens to a black person-its “racism”

There are hundreds of attacks-murders-rapes, daily in this country. Most of them are caused by blacks. Never will you here it was racism.

It just shows you how unsecure the blacks are,,Shame

The sports part of the news is great credit must given when due,Thabiso ‘TT’ Tema is just great,he surely knows his thing. Now Etv should introduce a sports channel,so we can hear ‘TT’ commentating in soccer matches he is just brilliant

    18. PP says:

      LOL

    19. PP says:

Do they pay you to compliment everyone??????? Clyde

    20. Enock Mpofu says:

I think South Africans should be grateful for having a wide range of professionals because it’s good for the economy and socio-cultural development. Attacking such a brilliant weather man is very xenophobic to say the least! “No man is an Island” especially in the wake of recent Hurricanes, unless South Africa wants to be one.

    21. Enock Mpofu says:

Reading news with captivating expressions!!! Listen to Tshepang and McFarlane in the morning bulleting on eNews Channel. Well done guys, you rock!!!

    22. Henry Jones says:

Hey I’ve always wanted a news channle for 500 bucks a month WOW. what a small audience they must have..

    23. Janet says:

Why on earth would E News feature apartheid era film clips at a time when emotions are so out of control in this country – why add fuel to a fire which is already raging beyond control – very poor timing guys!

    24. Pam Zukor says:

When will you show the Father and Sons Cricket Day which was on the 28th Sept. will it be on ETV how do I contact them please.

    26. Eddie Evans says:

Looked forward to e-news as a refreshing new channel but am disappointed because of:
      1. The main news appears to be mostly political, with other news of interest relegated to the one-line rolling strip at the bottom of the screen. Is e-news politically controlled?
      2. Is it necessary to have that incessant (moronic) beat in the background during news breaks?
      3. It seems as if we have inherited the habit of clogging the screen with logos and banners – do we really need this.

On a positive note – I regard most of the newsreaders as very competent with the ladies having an edge over the men.

    27. CATHY ORSMOND says:

I enjoy the news as it is very informing. I have a problem though: On the 9th October you mentioned a Catholic Priest that has abused children. Why do you put a picture of the Bible and a Cross next to the story. As a christian I am offended by this as this es emblems that portrait my faith. I would rather you put a picture of the Pope or a emblem of the catholic church there. Thank you very much. God bless.

    28. Graham Williams (Dbn) says:

The eNews channel is great but i do agree with Eddie Evens, 3rd October, that all news seems to be centred around politics. Come on news team, lets have some variation and something more positive and on the lighter side.
As for the weatherman Derek van Dam, I think he comes across well while showing the weather forcast. Well done Derek!

    29. Josh says:

With interest I watched the news this morning on the USA elections. What I found very strange and interesting that in the report “took to the streets to hear what South Africans had to say” only about 7 people were “interviewed” and very one sided as well. Not at all representative of South Africa. Does this really represent South Africa or just certain inhabitants? Please don’t fall into the trap of sentiment.

    30. Leon Loubser says:

What happened to my comment last night at 11h15 about the joking of political parties

    31. josh says:

Please dont notify me of followup comments via e-mail! I didn’t ask you to.

    32. Louis Weyer says:

Robin you look great with your glasses on don’t use contacts!!

    33. lusso says:

I am actually dissappointed by both news on e and on e news, same difference. there is no elaboration on interesting stories, on e its even worse cause news only take up 7 minutes.

    34. mark says:

Is it not possible to give weather in a similar manner to Sky, where they actually say it will be clearing by the afternooon, or that there is a 30% chance of rain in the morning clearing later!!! At the moment it is far too hit & miss!!!

    35. mark says:

      Nadia; How stunning!!! Absoluetly Gorgeous!!

    36. Louis Weyer says:

Please Robyn Smith wear glasses you look lovelier without contacts, PLEASE WEAR GLASSES!!

    37. Henry Jones says:

Bahhh If this E news was supposed to be like sky news, the weather would be a breaking news event LOL. Why don’t they run there channle unencrypted so that they can be noticed by everybody and not just the super rich?

    38. Lydon says:

To the above poster: you clearly have absolutely no knowledge as to the broadcasting regulations of this country.

Secondly, the E News Channel is definitely in a league of its own. It’s professional, aesthetically pleasing and something to be proud of. Watching SABC news is laughable in comparison.

The presenters are not all white…which is clearly what the issue here is. Considering the channel runs in English, however, it is understandable that English speaking people will be the ones presenting it. Take the black weather lady for example. As witty as she is, her pronunciation is a little skew at times.

    39. jeanette says:

I think eNews is actually very good. Jeremy Maggs is a pleasure to watch. The people that are sometimes inteviewed know their jobs, such as Justice Molala and Pierre Vos. It is an unbiased news and very informative. Derek van Dam is a breath of fresh air, and one can actually really understand what he is saying, even though he is an American, he learnt the names of our provinces and towns very quickly.

    40. Pieter says:

Why does the IEC allow X President Mandella’s supporters to display party political affiliation colours in the poling station? This clearly shows the ANC’s disregard for democracy, discipline, law and order. This proves the IEC not to be independent or acting on behalf of a free election process. Clearly allowing party political influencing and intimidation right up to the poling booth. IEC dismally failed us again.

    41. Sandra says:

I was always under the impression that all polling stations use the same indelible ink with which they mark voters’ fingers. While watching your election coverage this evening, I noticed a person’s finger being marked with what looked like a ball-point pen. A while later another was shown using what seemed to be an ordinary koki. Surely this clears the way for people wanting to vote fraudulently?

    42. Siya says:

I dont like that Derek guy. I always miss the weather details because am always focused on that fine body hiddn behind a suit and watchin his mouth produce tha all american accent. Next thing you know, the weather is over!!! Oops whats the weather like in Durban??? LOL

    43. John Stevens says:

Why do all, repeat all,TV commentators have to keep up a constant commentary of what is happening ,when we are totally able to see on the screen. We want to hear what is being said or hear what is being played,e.g.the inauguration,Debora Patta, and more Debora Patter,no time to hear who was arriving etc.Why have political debates going on during the ceremony, wait till afterwards.

    44. John Stevens says:

    45. Z.W.Kaczmarek says:

As a Polish South African I strongly object to your comment on today’s News Prime Time concerning “Polish concentration camp” and demand a retraction and an apology. During the 2nd World War Poland lost six milion of its citizens in the fight against German and Soviet Union aggression and it is an insult to state that there were any Polish concentration camps trying thus to exhonorate the Germans. They were German concentration camps in an area which to-day is Poland.

    46. Tom says:

You know that weather reporters are also Meteorologists with degrees. Weather reporters don’t simply just report. It’s entirely different than a regular broadcast journalist.

    47. Bonaventure says:

      Hello,
I am happy the way Africa is coming up in many things like this e-news. I love the fact that we can show the world that we can. However, if we think we can why do we bring men from Briton to come and help us with our weather? We can do it our self. I also want to thank and encourage the men that are selected in the news reading. Thanks gays you people are doing just fine. The women would have taking over everything. Forgetting that man is the head of the house as Christ is the head of the church.
      Bona

    48. ignatios says:

just watched an enews clip on the disruption of the constitutional process by zanu supporters yesterday. the report was pathetic in that it claimed the disruption was caused supporters of both parties. It is not clear why that reporter failed to get her facts before trying to implicate mdc supporters in the disturbance. Lets hope in future enews improves on the quality and acuracy of its reports.

    49. Hannatjie Bosman says:

This mornings interview with Kani, what a beautiful refreshing lady…One question only.. Why do we in SA still after 15 years have to say there is not enough representation of one or other colour in a job, parliment, soccer team, rugby team, swimming team ext…Please it will sort it out over time, see people as just that…people not colour…

    50. Thabani says:

Enews Please investigate the delays at Beitbridge Border Post – we are now reosrting to flying. That border is a mess. Do we have a home affairs minister. 7 hours to cross a border, whilst with a plane 2 hrs -you are in Harare from Jozi. Send a third Degree team there. Please! Please! Please! Please!

i mostly like your three days whether forecast.one can plan ahead and you manage to cover all the areas(i.e.cloudy/rainy-i like that about you)wheras in ather news the whether is the same all the time.

    53. douglas says:

today, 1 Feb 2010 was the worst i have seen broadcasted from the inception of your launch….the technical glitches and poor sound management….not proud….

    54. Petra says:

Please HELP us! Faeries have hi-jacked our eNews Weather Presenters!!! It started with the blonde FAERIE who suddenly glided onto our screens – from right to left – thinking she is oh so ELEGANT… but oh so irritating! And those elaborate – also ‘gliding’(?!) gestures and hand motions! Oh my!… Then, alas! MORE gliders appeared! Even some of the males have taken to gliding! Now we are the only country who have faeries gliding past the screen from side to side. WHO ON EARTH are training them to be so over-the-top and annoyingly fairy-like!? FIRE HER! – OR HIM!!! For Pete sake – just be NATURAL. We are making fools of ourselves!

    55. Lydon says:

      No, Petra…you are embarrassing YOURSELF.

    56. chipasu says:

I like your news. Please keep it up. Am always updated about our mother Africa and the whole world, especially football news which is my favourite sport. As a zambian, I wish to commend you for your hard work.

    57. Magdel says:

Deborah, please just make it clear to us why you would so hatedly refer to Eugene Terreblanche as Die-hart Racist????????????????????? Get you facts together!!

    58. Robert says:

Deborah – I see that the almost forgotten history(Video footage)of Eugene Terreblanche is dished up almost as an excuse as to why he was murdered.
I DARE YOU and your crappy little TV channel to dish up the terrorist activities of Mandela and his ANC followers when he dies. Of course you wont dish up his and his terrorist cronies dirt because you are a bloody coward.

    59. owen says:

      Hi Deborah,
I was watching your interview on Sunday, According to the ANC there is not hate in this country, please have a look a face book, comments made, Lets kill 4 million whites, let P… in their food and call it a joke, etec etc What do they call this, These items should be brought up on your programme, I would like to hear their comments, go for it you are doing a good job, bring it out in the open

    60. Colin Chambers says:

16:35 Sat 10th March 2010. I have just watched Pres. Zuma deliver a press conf. Although he roundly condemned Malema for his recent nonsense, he missed the golden opportunity he had to score some political points with most of non ANC members by failing to announce that Malema had been expelled from the ANC. He went on to tell us that it is OK in many instances to sing “Kill the farmer, kill the boer” because it was part of the “strugle” but that it was not alright to fly the previous SA flag. I do conceed that the President did not recommend banning the flag, but that it should not be encouraged. I would like him to state that he does not “encourage” singing the song. Both actions would be helpful jestures in creating harmony amongst all the people.

    61. willem van der walt says:

Jeremy Maggs’ question to the legal journalist reporting on today’s hearing at Ventersdorp (14.4.2010) must be the PUN OF THE YEAR: “Did you get to the bottom of the sodomy claim?”

    62. Tumi mabeta says:

I would say bond between black n white ppl is going to take yr n yr, war is not answer, because some of us have invested energy, time and a lot of money

    63. Owen says:

I fully agree with Tumi, it is time we put our hands to-gether and start bonding – we have a lovely country, by joining hands we can even make SA a better country, I know it is hard to say this lets forget about past,

    64. Mrs. L. de Wet says:

We in Namibia enjoy this channel very much, since we do not have SABC 2 to bring us the latest news. We would gladly appreciate it if we could also have the wheather report of Namibia as many of South Africans come to our country and we have no propper TV channel in Namibia that provides us with this information. PLEASE considder this! Thank you!!!

    65. Bafana says:

Thanks to the news team their the classic world class a complete match to leading world news broadcasters keep it up its owesome eeee!

    66. Clø says:

21 DAYS, PUBLIC SERVANTS STRIKE, how did the talks go,if ever there were any…?

    67. Tricia says:

The morning news on eNews matches (and even surpasses) anything offered from overseas. Macfarlan and Iman make a wonderful team, with great banter yet cover with seriousness where they need to. I hope they don’t get snapped up by foreign stations. They are superb. HOWEVER, the DREADULLY phoney American accent of the showbiz reporter is irritating, so absurd and patronising. Either get someone else or tell her to learn some diction. WE DON’T SPEAK LIKE THAT!!!! ARRRRRRRRRRRRRR …is what she does so much it is horrible!!!!! But YAY to Macfarlan and Iman, they are good reason to keep watching. Well done you are the BEST on that channel!!!!

    68. fb says:

please investigate why UTE teachers from ilembe district have not been paid since january.

I’m tired of faxing letters to the MEC’s office and not receiving a response.

      please help us, eNews!!

there are 6 of us from our school that have not been paid.

      help, help, help!!

    69. Barbara says:

I would like to request that you inform Magdel who gives us the weather report in the mornings on ENews Channel – weather, not to refer to “the rest of South African”, but “the rest of South Africa”. I can’t understand how nobody in that department has not picked up this mistake?!!Regards,
      Barbara.

    70. Barbara says:

Thank you for correcting Magdel, now she sounds fantastic.

    71. Barbara says:

Does anybody fron the ENews Channel read these comments? I have have just heard Magdel saving again: “For the rest of South AfricaN”. Can somebody correct her – it is embarrassing.

    72. Fanie Swart says:

Please teach Magdel to say Natal and not Natil when doing the wether.
