I was reading a Sunday Newspaper and the headline was: “Cracks appearing in Cope”. I found this a rather interesting headline so decided to read further. What they were basically saying is that all does not seem to be going as smoothly as we may be lead to believe behind the scenes in COPE. Apparently there is a struggle for power within the new party with regards to who is in charge. From what we had gathered, Mosiuoa Lekota was the leader of COPE. But now they say that there are tensions between Lekota and Shilowa with the later apparently undermining Lekota and being said not to ‘respect’ Lekota.

Now there is a thirty party in this alleged struggle: Mluleleki George. It is said that George is lobbying to become the deputy leader of COPE on the basis that he has grass-roots support in the Eastern Cape which for now is the only province COPE could take away from the ANC in next year’s election.

We will only now what the structures and positions in COPE are come December 16 when COPE is meant to officially launch. Chance are that the leader of COPE is not going to be the parties candidate for the presidency of the country if they win the elections next year. It is not uncommon for there to be competition for place within a political party but are these apparent ‘divisions’ within COPE true are it is just the media hyping it up?

COPE IS THE PARTY OF POWER HUNGRY PEOPLE. I’M NOT AMAZED. THAT IS WHAT THEY REPRESENT, THAT IS WHAT THEY STAND FOR. THANKS FOR THEIR COLOURS. ONLY DISGRUNTLED PEOPLE WILL FOLLOW THEM.

Ayub on 26 November, 2008 at 8:30 am

I think that it is not disgruntled people that will follow them but rather people who believe in the ideals of the ANC. What the ANC has become is the playground for a few power hungry people with their own agendas

Willie on 27 November, 2008 at 7:36 pm

There may be a little tension but thats to be expected. I don’t believe it is anything to worry about, sanity will prevail. The media will grap anything + run even if it’s a titbit.

Zakes on 28 November, 2008 at 9:03 am

It is not surprising. COPE is the party of those who want to position themselves for wealth. The fact that the interim committee which being led by Lekota was elected after the delegates left is evidence that there is xhosaphobia amongst some of the leaders. It is true that the majority of attendees at the convention were from the WC and EC. Mluleki George sees this as an opputunity to vie for a top post. Members in the the latter provinces are brave to come out into the open. In most provinces COPE members are still operating underground because they still see the formation of COPE as a pilot project which they are not sure it will succeed. Most of them are oppurtunists who lost positions in the ANC democratically.

lusso on 4 December, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Its pretty much obvious that COPE cant cope, I mean these are power hungry lossers who believe that leadership is their birth right. I wont be suprised if COPE folds away and dissappear because of leadership competitions . . .

Gilbert on 4 December, 2008 at 3:23 pm

COPE is the party that can take out South African from the desert we are in currently. I believe in democracy and judiciary, if we can have one party to rule the country the deliveries and services will be poor and the individual will continue enriching themseves. COPE, we as the concern South African we support you.

Thulani on 4 December, 2008 at 3:51 pm

Ayub on 5 December, 2008 at 8:19 am

I voted ANC because I believed in the ideals of the organisation. Yes there are individuals in leadership positions that will cause the party to fail in this elections but I still believe in the ideals of the organisation and will vote for it and not the personalities.

monde on 6 December, 2008 at 5:53 am

monde on 6 December, 2008 at 6:20 am

Mmamy on 6 December, 2008 at 12:58 pm

I bet one will have informed point of view be fore the next election. Viva to Education Viva to COPE

Kelebogile on 8 December, 2008 at 11:26 am

well we are all confused right in this country we dont know who to trust or believe anymore, and i still believe that DA will do good in the next elections because people have lost hope in the ANC and certainly they wont fall into Copes trap again. I can rather go back to being ruled by whites than our black gorvenment which is only thinking of their own selfish needs.DA has this support in Alex too much Support i must i believe that it will make it next year.

Sekgana on 10 December, 2008 at 7:44 am

I never belonged in any political but even though my extended family are top ANC bras. I always voted to ANC as I had no confidence in any other pary. But now that COPE is formed, I will take full membership and participate in policy development. It is good to join a praty at its inception date as there are no veterans who will oppress new/younger members.

Ayub on 10 December, 2008 at 8:11 am

Cope is saying that the ANC has failed in service delivery, what I want to know from the leadership of Cope is that what did you deliver when you were part of the ANC and Government? How sure can I be that you will deliver this time around if you are put into power? As for Animal Farm, let the Snowball and Napoleons fight it out but remember we are not the rest of the animals WE HAVE A SAY so say it with your vote…..VIVA ANC VIVA

Kelebogile on 10 December, 2008 at 9:07 am

That is so True, you know what I can rather stick to the tried and tested, we really dont know wether this new party will deliver as they promise to do. Go Jason water falls better stick to the rivers and the lakes that you used too.So I am sticking to the lakes and the rivers and that i am used too.

Catherine K Losaba on 10 December, 2008 at 10:44 pm

COPE is a political HOME for all South Africans who have HOPE to sustain the democracy.Wishing this yet to be born baby a warm stay in this world and HOPE it COPES with all tights of life.Like Abraham whom God called to deliver and lead the people to the promise land COPE will.See you in BLOM.

Bheki on 11 December, 2008 at 2:22 pm

To Mammy

Dear, don’t try to educate us about things you don’t understand yourself.

I don’t think you know how your beloved Ntate Lekota reacted towards the people of Khutsong when they were expressing their democratic and constitutional rights; and I won’t tell you.

Go read about it and understand. You will be able to formulate an “educated” opinion as to whether Ntate is democratic or not. Sadly you won’t find it in the Animal Farm text you are reading at the moment, try more recent material.

Bheki on 11 December, 2008 at 2:28 pm

To Catherine K Losaba

The only tides your “new born baby” will have to cope with are the loss in the elections next year and the constant defeats in parliament until Jesus comes. It won’t be warm but ‘HOT’.

Kelebogile on 12 December, 2008 at 9:37 am

Viva ANC Viva, I believe in this party and my loyalty stays with it I wont just go with flow no, in Setswana we say ga gona ntlo e esa neleng! each and every house has its problems i just pray and hope that ANC will weather any storm i believe in those people, And Letoka is not a peoples person his short tempered.

Mammy on 23 December, 2008 at 2:11 am

bheki; One can not educate a stone; Shame It is obvious U did not to go far with education and life in general. If read close to the fine print You wont be quick to jump to concluctions and point fingers.Having to explain the German and Russian politics and how power corrupts even the unexpected would be like BHEKI talking to Malema. Not everything on newspapers is what it seem to be.What happen in Kgutsong is Far complicated than You can Imagine and Politics is a Dirty Game.Rather be Wise not to comment on others opinions cause\not matter how lukewarm u feel; they are all entittled to share their opinions. Ask your self when was the last time u did Good or shared a word that can build even visit KGUTSONG to give a helping hand to our fellow citizens. We have more we can chew do not add bitterness to it. Better your life and GROW UP.

sinovuyo L on 5 January, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Lekota, Gorge, and the rest lost democraticaly in polokwane, they also realised that they will not be included in ANC list proceses, and advised other councillors from the anc to hang on to their position and see whether they will be incuded in the list before they can resign, they also urged the would be defectors from the ANC to keep thier post in order to put food on the table for their families and resign at the end of their terms, this shows me that COPE is formed just to get people to vote polokwane rejecs back to office not becouse they want to bring new ideas or change, but to feed thier tumies, as they did in the ANC, ask your self why they did’nt elect their leadership democratically, and what they did while they were in Government ANC is not Zuma or Malema. VIVA ‘ANC’ VIVA I will vote for the African national congres(ivili nomkhonto

Bheki on 24 January, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Mammy,
I am disturbed by ur reference to my lack of education. Wonder where u know me from. Not that I think education is the only tool for success, but for ur informatin, I graduated with an LLB degree from Wits; and currently doing my Articles.

I am confused what u mean with German and Russian politics; myself and Malema. Please explain. Also don’t understand how u expect me to help people of Khutsong. If u listen to the news, you would know that the ANC has said Khutsong will remain in Gauteng, which is what they protested for. It is not complicated as you suggest. What made it look complicated were the insistance of people like Shilowa and Mafumadi that Khutsong be moved to NW.

This is a comment section, I will therefore comment on who ever’s opinion I feel like. Be open to debate, it will give you information so that you make well informed opinions.

Lastly, I do not read ‘close to the fine print’, I read the fine print. Try doing the same, it will enlighten you. Oh hey! I am not bitter, hope you not too.

Kelebogile on 3 February, 2009 at 2:37 pm

HW CN WELL EDUCATED PPL VOTE 4 DA ANC DATS DISGUSTIN ,U SHUD B ASHAMED OF URSELFS

Bheki on 10 February, 2009 at 6:36 pm

It is unfortunate to suggest that Kgalema belongs to a Mbeki admonistrations. He made his decision in Polokoane when he accepted nomination in the Zuma camp, and not Mbeki’s. Anyway I don’t think he would be very amused to be told that he belongs in the past, which is what Mbeki’s administration is.

When did the ANC start to be an organistion of the uneducated only? Read Mbeki’s previous speeches. He has on several occasions, togather with other leaders, stated that the ANC is a broad church. It means that it belongs to everyone, including the educated and the uneducated. People should learn that education, as much as it is spring board to success, it also has a potential to brainwash the ‘educated’ into thinking that they the only intelligent ones. That is not necessarily true. Take a look at our neighbour, Zimbabwe. Mugabe is said to have 11 degrees. Is this what educated people do? Same goes for your beloved Mbeki. The man thinks he the only capable person to run SA. He is wrong, and the ANC proved that last September.

Does anyone know where I could contact somebody at COPE? I would like to make a contribution to their campaign.

Bheki on 19 March, 2009 at 4:50 pm

No, I don’t know. Perhaps it’s a good thing you don’t know their contacts cos you would be wasting your contribution.

Thethe on 7 April, 2009 at 1:54 pm

They say rather deal with the devil you know (ANC) than inviting the new one (COPE). the very same people who are hip and hype about how corrupt ANC is, those are the very same people who grew and were groomed by the very same political party ANC. The people who are turning ANC into a Banana party is our Media, fellow oppositions but what they are not releasing is they are turning South Africa into a laughing stock not Zuma or ANC. What happened to our rainbow nation? what happened to our ideal leaders of our country? all you do is to stab each other at the back instead of coming together and work as a big team to lead the country in the right direction and respectfully!

yolisa on 24 April, 2009 at 3:27 pm

COPE IS A STRONG ORGANIZATION.IT IS GIVING ANC A GOOD COMPETITION…IT WILL ONLY GROW FROM STRENGHT TO STRENGHT REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE CRITICS SAY..I APPLAUDE THE LEADERS OF COPE ON THEIR BRILLIANT WORK.DON’T LOSE HOPE JUST BECAUSE WE GOT LESS VOTES,OUR TURN WILL COME..AND TO THOSE WHO VOTED FOR COPE “CONGRATULATIONS!” YOUR VOTE IS NOT LOST IN VAIN…..VIVA COPE MY HOPE

mtholeni on 16 June, 2009 at 9:55 pm

one precondition in joining COPE(MEANING FAKE) u need to be a powermonger

Bheki on 17 June, 2009 at 1:35 pm

I had resigned myself not to writing about Cope anymore, hence my silence. But it is disturbing to see that there are people who have not realised that the party is doomed…it was from the begining.

There is nothing particularly wrong for being happy that you voted Cope in the elections, and lost. But to think that Cope is going to win the 2014 elections, or any elections for that matter, it’s a dream; and unfortunately will remain that.

To suggest that Cope will give the ANC good competition is equally a dream. You failed to beat the DA for the official opposition spot; and the indications given by your leader Shilowa to oppose even the unopposable, is very stupid. What did he hope for when he nominated Dandala as candidate for presidency in response ANC’s Zuma nomination. He (they)did not think and embarrassed the Priest in the process. So give us a break about ‘compettion’, may they will try to make it difficult to govern, but as always, thay will come second best.

I am one amongst the million people who are dissapointed by what COPE turned to be. It ws my first experience on politics since I never been a member of any before. Isaw hope and political home in COPE, but it turned out being something else. I think we have to cope with the happenings and hope that one of the two elephants will come to his senses and allow the hopeful South Africans to enjoy their hopes.
