As the political climate in South Africa is gathering a lot of momentum in the build up to the elections next year, there seems to be a lot of debate about which party one will vote for. A lot of talk of late has been about the new Congress of the People (COPE) party that was formed as a result of a break away from the ruling ANC. COPE is set to provide a lot of competition to the ANC come the elections. With all the hype about COPE, some may have forgotten that a party called the DA (Democratic Alliance) exists. Maybe that is why the DA relaunched themselves recently so that they can remind people that they still exist and they to are an alternative to the ANC. So now with two fairly large opposition parties emerging in South Africa (COPE and DA) why is all the hype behind COPE and not the same hype being behind the DA?

Please share with us your views on “Why COPE and not DA?” if you do not want the ANC.

I was initially ANC (at heart) member. But after what has unveilled I think its time I look elsewhere.

As for the DA, i consider it a worthy opponent and its policies do appeal to me favourably so, however I feel it is not reaching to the ordinary South African and it is not familiarising itself with the lower end of the SA people.

COPE on the other hand has first experience on the lower end of the SA people and does promote and seem to promise inclusiveness i.e. all races, new and old. I think for me this appeals to promoting and embracing SA diversity. Hence why COPE and not DA

Kelebogile on 20 November, 2008 at 8:53 am

Well I feel sorry for us ordinary South African the war is coming we should just prepare ourselves.
As for the new party I dont even consider it I can rather go to DA, because this people only think about power and money then after they will forget that we exist. with DA in power we will all be equal and a white person always provides we all know that they dont think of their selfish needs only but they also think of someone else.
For me DA is perfect.

I am kind of interested in COPE due to the mere fact that, this government will still be ruled by an African. on the other hand i wonder what difference they will bring because some of them have been part of this government system since 1994, but all they do is promise the people change. I’m not into politics but from my point of view, if COPE has a strong strategy on how they are going to govern our country. The war that is going on between these organisations will result in this country’s economy being worst then Zimbabwe. Imagine paying a taxi fare with a suitcase full of money and still get no change.

democracy is what we wanted, but somehow it feels like there are still those apartheid individuals who still have a say on how the country is suppose to be run. Let us not give them another chance but work on their mistakes and improve this country and its people.

Another this is this, we the youth are wild at heart, but we don’t need a leader that is going to curse on live television and in front of millions of youth listening to his childish speech. we require an individual with dignity and integrity to guide the youth in the right way. COPE find us that individual otherwise your support will also be on thin ice, he must be able to act right.

COPE for me!

I must agree with Siya, the DA have failed to embrace the lower end of SA people. The party and its policies are good however COPE is positioned nicely in the middle and they embrace everyone. ANC will get a big fright next year and DA will unfortunately also lose votes. The ANC can’t rule forever, just look at the Nats, they dead now.

We really neeed to be a normal society by embracing what is good and rejecting what is bad without looking on the colour and the only party that cn sail us through that bridge of mistrust and racial categorisation is COPE because they have libaration track record that is undisputable or tainted. it is also new with fresh ideas suitable for a modern and vibrant society that is based on quality and not quantity. it also has got a ample space for the learned to be involved from the scratch and enjoy the fruits of todays team work. I think COPE need to include in their web where to get membership card and where to get information when needed about COPE. Viva new era

The DA under different names eg. the Progressive Party, The United Party and the Progressive Federal Party. They were in control of Durban but did nothing whatsoever for black people. In fact they hid behind, and continued to implement the apartheid policies. They used apartheid policy as an excuse to do nothing for black people, and blamed the Nationalist Party for it.
So how can I give the DA a vote when they were part of the apartheid regime.
Why Cope? COPE offers us a genuine democracy and an opposition to
a Communist led ANC government

COPE stands for:
-Clear minds and not polluted.
-Open for everyone to come in.
-Perfect timing when everything is topsy tarvey.
-Everybody is welcome.
COPE IS THE ONE FOR YOU!

cmj on 25 November, 2008 at 2:39 pm

i think this is a strategy by top anc alliance leaders to stop the DA from gaining momentum. the DA is dangerous and COPE will target the middle class and the ANC will target the working class

I Think The New Party (COPE)Is A Smoke Screen To Make The People Blind For DA

Xolisa on 4 December, 2008 at 10:59 am

I was the full member of ANC.but accordingly to the dirty games that were played by learders made me to suddenlly changed my minds.but by the anger i had to my self i wont vote.but some of people who saw the game diceded to quit and form this new org.thats the thing that makes me to have pride about my home again becouse when it’s only you who is rulling you don’t care becouse you don’t have competitor. So ANC should pull up their socks by maing door to door canvasing.other wise not in worceter coz we promised our selves that we as COPE gonna win this struggle. From COPE Youth Organiser

Kelebogile on 9 December, 2008 at 10:44 am

Well i heard you guys, you have made you point clear, now i understand why cope not DA!

me on 17 December, 2008 at 2:43 pm

Why not join COPE and DA?????? Together they can make big noice!!!!

Yanga Dlamkile on 9 January, 2009 at 3:50 pm

i have been listening to commemts of the public and i like what COPE is doing, they brought the community special the youth close to politics,i am just worried about those who gonna put the vote anywhere because they dont understand changes\politics that are occurring within our country…come 2009 election..VIVA COPE!!!

D.F. Gowlett on 23 January, 2009 at 5:46 pm

I’m delighted the MaMbeki has joined Cope, but trust that Cope would not welcome Thabo Mbeki should he decide to join. As someone responsible for tens if not hundreds of thousands of deaths through his AIDS denialism and his policy on Zimbabwe.

Baba Khumalo on 20 February, 2009 at 1:06 pm

COPE OR DA for me there is no difference Cope is just a black DA. How are they going to reverse 300yrs of colonian rule, we were removed form Sophiatown, District Six by force, we were send to homelands for yrs, we were forced to carry brown document with permits. Today everybody has got has got a BETTER AGENDA? Aparthied was not only about colour it killed our moral fibre as African’s, it killed our why of live. So how can we forget, how can we forget? We can forgive but not forget. As black people we need to ensure we VOTE with our clear hearts and minds for the only Organisation that has fought for us “ALL THESE YEARS” ANC of Mandela, Tambo and Sisulu That is why Tata Mandela still supports the ANC.

Nonceba on 28 February, 2009 at 9:05 pm

Cope is a two months little baby, with its fresh mind dat has saved the lives of South Africans, dat were not going to take part on the 2009 elections, and thanks to Cope for engaging youth in politics,Cope will govevern.

Xolisa Williams on 9 March, 2009 at 1:42 pm

I’m wondering that previous elections A.N.C won by 27% D.A 15% e.t.c,COPE formed so my question is from wich side did cope deduct/A.N.C going to win by 27%?

Xolisa Williams on 10 March, 2009 at 10:27 am

Go COPE(Thatha cope Thatha) coz you were formed for better changes and developments.Since other political parties seemed to struggle for doing that and only taking of care when it’s gonna be elections, and after that they just dont care of people. So Cope you promised us that you’ll make it works.and you wont let the people down by not treating them fairly and equally.

Nathi Sishi on 22 March, 2009 at 4:53 pm

Viva ANC Viva. Down with the copycat. Forward with the opposition party campaigning 4 the ANC. The only thing we hear is ANC once all the opposition party open their mouth. Zuma for President. Phansi ne animal farm by Lekota and Shilowa. People come first. ANC rules. Long live ANC long live.

Nathi Sishi on 22 March, 2009 at 4:57 pm

Lekota and Shilowa have failed the people. So whats new.

Bheki on 24 March, 2009 at 8:34 am

It is amazing how some people can be persuaded without much effort. They actually believe that Terror and Shilowa; and their latest sidekick, the Pastor, could actually break in 4 months what the ANC has build for moyre than 90 year. Thank God these people are in the minority.

You are always preaching democracy, but COPE’s leadership is hardly democratically elected but imposed on you.

I must however congratulate COPE for not appointing Lekota as their Presidential candidate. He is no material for the position, not that I think the Pastor is. Reason being Lekota lacks vision, he failed to see that some people in his organisation only joined to ensure that only people from a certain tribe ascend to the highest office in the land. He didn’t see it until it was too late.

As for your dreams that COPE might win next election, keep dreaming.

I do not have time or the energy to write anything about the DA, they are not worth it.

Jackie on 11 April, 2009 at 10:37 am

Well, I am for Change, and Hope Cope is able to bring fresssssh and sasssy politics to our motherland. I say Cope, because we are about youth. I advocate for the inclusion of young minds into our political mainstream. Remember that we as an older generation will move on and become pensioners soon and must therefore have a succession plan which we in Cope advocates for. The empowerment of young people into leadersip position by key party is our major priority. Our party does not speak colour, we speak South Africans Cope is about South Africa and all it’s people.

vincent on 9 March, 2010 at 1:03 pm

This is Twenty Ten, we said that is the year of action, change and we want the development in our Live’s. We ready to Vote for Cope. One other think that i like about COPE is the have respect. Most of the time when Mr Lekota To talk you see him he is a Proffetional leader.
