So the Presidency finally got its hotline setup today. For those who do not know what is happening, Jacob Zuma promised us during his campaign that he will setup a hotline whereby we could call in and air our grievances. Officers at the Union Buildings call centre will handle calls and respond to public inquiries, and citizens will be able to lodge their queries by dialling the toll-free number, 17737.

It has been reported that in the first 3 hours of operation, they received 6000 calls. Now I have not yet called in to see how this is all going to work but I can imagine the kind of calls they are going to be receiving. I seriously doubt that a lot of people will be phoning in to praise the government as the bulk of the callers will be complaining about service delivery, schooling, housing, electricty etc. I would hate to be one of the people answering the calls!

What I am interested to find out is what happens when someone makes a call. Do you get given a reference number for you to then follow up your query with? With the large number of complaints that are going to be received, are the government going to be able to handle all the requests and attend to them? I think people also need to be told when to use this hotline. If I do not have electricity, should I call this hotline? I don’t think so, I should contact Eskom. But if I have never had electricity in my house for years then I must call this hotline. So I guess it is a matter of being reasonable enough to know when to use this number and I hope us as South Africans are able to differentiate when to call 17737.

It will be interesting to see how well this hotline works and we must see evidence in one form or the other of it working. What are your thoughts about 17737?

Labour Relations query
A number of people I know or have heard of were retrenched last year and have found themselves in financial difficulty resulting in them been listed with the credit bureau as bad creditors, this is now creating problems in seeking new work as most jobs requests that one needs to be credit clear. I are all these people that have been affected by the recession with bad debt able to get out of there debt if the workplace insists that one needs to be credit cleared. Any suggestions on who to contact to address this problem or who can we send a petition to regarding this probem.

AMMAAR on 5 January, 2010 at 11:21 am

i understand what you saying, but its not from last year that i am trying to get an id,its for the past 8 to 10 years.u talking of debt, imagine what im going through,i cant even get a job, they had a job but never did there job.
just hope things can work out

Virginia Stroud on 5 January, 2010 at 6:11 pm

I do sympathies with you and do not know your whole story is, however I have no idea where u get the idea that they did not do there job!! The company shut down and therefore were retrenched, one gets fired for not doing there job not retrenched. I can only highlight the problems that I have come across. I do realise that there are many problems in the various goverment sectors that need to be resolved. We need people on the ground level that can are organised, think logically and be more service orientated, not parrots. Saying this I also need to say that I have had a lot of positive experiences in some of the goverment departments.
Just read through your whole letter
What documentation do you have? I had the same problem 30 years ago but managed to sort it out. let me know what you have and I will see what I can do for you

I’m government employee for over 10 years now. After giving birth to a still born I applied for a funeral benefit from the Government Employee Pension Fund (GEPF). My first application was faxed on 22 June 2009 and again on 08 July 2009 after enquiring about the payout. I had opted for Post Office payment but when I got to the post office I was informed that their system does not pick up my ID number theirfore they cannot pay me even after producing a letter from GEFP. I phoned GEPF and was given a lot of reference numbers but still the post office was adamant that there was no money received. I contacted GEPF again and enquired about what to do if I wanted the money to be paid into my bank account. I was informed the funds would remain with the post office for 31 days, if unclaimed post office will return them. I posted the original certified copies of the required documents in order to paid via bank on 25 September 2009 through registred mail after verifying that the funds have indeed been returned. I haven’t been paid up until today. I contacted them 7 times already and even spoken to a supervisor there. They just take my details and promised to make a follow and revert back to me. But they never do. What kind of Batho Pele principle is practised in that office.

Frustrated

MANDENI LOCATION SITUATED IN DURBAN!!!
Could government officials please attend to Mandeni as they really need serious help, in regard to the issues affecting & sorrounding them, they are not fully supported when it comes to Information, there’s that lack of knowledge regarding HIV & AIDS, Their Cemetry is not really suitable for one to burry their loved ones.I was there attending a funeral on Saturday the 23th, it was unbearable and apparently their Counsellor is not doing anything about it!!!People are complaining that whenever someone takes action(matter to their counsellor), they get killed, so Please do something before its too LATE. Thanks!

I had a accident at work on 04-03-2009 and was operated on 29-04-2009. WCA forms, medical reports, resumption reports and self paid accounts has been submitted numerously even via registered mail and up to date workman compensation has not refunded the medical bills which I paid nor the resumption that my employer did not pay me while I was off sick. Every time we call the general call centre we are informed that they have not received these accounts or that they need more documentation. I have also handed all documenation to the provinsial office in Cape Town and the gentleman Shadrack that assist also confirmed that all the accounts was last send to Mrs Mhopape and resumption reports was send to Mr Cathline Fourie on 06-01-2010. I received a bank confirmation form and handed this to the Cape Town provincial office and this was send to Pretoria on 08-02-2010 and still Shadrack confirm that no accounts is due to be paid back to me. He called me last week and requested that I send him a copy of my salary slip as this is still outstanding (now I ask you - this documentation was also requested in June 2009 and October and was send via the Bellville office to Shadrack) Please tell me why do I have to deal with such incompetance and wait so long to have my money paid back to me. If I owe moneys to some one then I have 3 months to pay the accounts or I get handed over for legal action. What makes the government so special to think that they do not to refund moneys that is due to me or that they can take years to do so. The accounts total to over R30′000-00 and if this money was still in my bank account I would of earned interest on this. I would say that its just fair that the years interest is refunded as well. the approved Case number is A9021858 and would appriciate that someone look into this

I bought a stand in Ennerdale a in 2004 and was corrupted by one of the developers. I reported him and we went to court and he paid back the money.

I then went to housing to pay the stand and am not owing a cent. I went back to housing to try and get a title deed and was told that a lot of stands are to be sorted out before they can give a tile deed.

My complaint is that how long must I wait to be able to build a house of my own - I dream to have a home also.

Disgusting service at Northdale Hospital and everytime i go there, there is no improvement!

Staff have a careless attitude and don’t take their proffesion seriously! Big Racism!

Margaret on 19 April, 2010 at 12:22 am

Poor service at Northdale Hospital Casualty Department on Sunday 18/04/2010. Arrived there at 11.50 am and waited 6 hours before was seen. Staff kept on putting my mom’s file at the bottom of the pile. Was 4 on green code then they made me 15 from the bottom. Huge Racism! Private security called my daughter a colour ba-meaning a racist because he asked her to go wait in the patient waiting room but didn’t ask any of the other people to also go and wait in the patient waiting room. Staff unfriendly, unhelpful, rude,
take lunchtime and teatimes when no body to relief them. Snail pace!

One elderly nearly went back to her old age home because she couldn’t wait any longer. She had sever diarrhea.

Govt and Company security in my opinion doesn’t know their job and is very bias. Govt security refused to take a statement from me when i asked him to do so.

Basically treat worst than a dog by uncaring staff!

I recommend that Casualty gets their Act in order as their has been many newspaper reports and still no change at all!

How would they like us to treat their faimilies like they treat ours!

Many babies who was sick but weren’t seen to until 9 hours later. Babies and eldery suppose to be given pirority first. It was 6pm (6hours later) that my mom who was in excuriating pain was seen to. Many patients were unhappy about the service and many were only too happy to tell me about theire dilema at this hospital. They were very eager to have their photo’s taken when i asked them if they don’t mind.

i very rude nursing sister took my photo in causalty without my permission, and my mom is my witness. When i eventually went in a took her photo before asking her permission and she said yes. Then the security guards (private and govt ) mistreated me a threw me out of casualty!

Staff at casualty is very rude, very unfriendly, unhelpful and don’t show Batho PELE as displayed on the wall.

The doctor who eventually was seen by my mom was rude and asked her why she came on a weekend when weekends are for emergencies. I told her that my was in excuriating pain and she is elderly and doesn’t drive.

The wheelchairs were very odl and very uncomfortable. |Yet the Hospital has money for 3 extremly large photo’s in front of cascualty. I wish they get their pirorities right. The Matron Gumede was unhelpful when i complained to her a couple of times.

Dear Mr President

I am the South African resident, when I’m not home I feel that SA is a democratic country. But when I’m going back home I just sence the terro because of no-service delivered in da community where I live.I live at KwaMduku, Nyathini, the town is Hluhluwe. The leaders there lack the skills of leading us ,they forget that our president said everybody in SA should hv access to electricity and water. But there is no electricity in da area even the government primary school(Khathazile Primary School) doesn’t hv electricity.

May you pls send someone to observe how does municipality use money of the state. There might be some corruption going on at Umkhanyakude offices at Hluhluwe. What we want is electricity.

I’v been there more than 2 decades ,no improvement.

Thank you Mr President.

Dear Mr President

I would first like to thank the opportunity that you gave us , of raising our voices to your ears; this is true democracy

My concerned is that, as a second year social work student at Univ. KwaZulu Natal, we are neglected by the department of Social development while we are going to be future social workers. They have not responded to our bursary applications that were posted twice last year. They keep on telling us that there is money for us to study while they are not doing anything to invest on having more social workers in this country. We as UKZN social work2 student urge you to intervene in this case because there are people who haven’t payed their intuition fees untill now. And we cannot concentrate while knowing that we could be academically excluded at anytime.

As a government that prioritise education please make sure that we do not go back home without education while the budget for scholarships was allocated. furthermore, our countries need social workers and we are here, already in second year, we only need funding from The Department of Social Development in order to reach our dreams of changing the nation into a better place. Even the world structural oppresing systems and institutions to be be more just.

This is Mr Bongane Mzinyane (18) at UKZN

I attended the opening of Soccer City and Nedbank cup. The stadium looks good BUT there were a lot of things not adressed for the ordinery poeple.
1. There were no toilet papers in the ladies rooms
2. Not sanitery bins in the ladies
3. No changing areas for the babies
4. Vendors that were selling food, use the hands to serve food
5. The security guards not trained about rules, they did not allow me to enter the stadium with my 2.5 yers son bottle and told me that I will use it to consume alcohol. And he suggested that I breastfeed him…. ?
6. We were not notified that the BRT buses to Soweto have a new station that is behind the entrance facing the main road, the main road was transporting people going to JHB CBD only. Walking around the stadium to get to the new station, we asked several security gaurds who had no clue where the station was.
Once we got to the station, we waited in a queu for 1 and 30 min before we can buy tickets and had to wait for the buses to arrive back from Soweto.

We had no other option but to use the BRT because no taxis were allowed around the stadium. SO WE HAD NO CHOICE.
7. The traffic from Noordgesig thru to Orlando Stadium took an hour to get thru.
8. When we finally got to our stop at around 9 o’clock, I had to walk for 2 Kms to get home because there were no taxis.

The current BRT system is failing to transport poeple especially for event like this, now I understand why the taxi industry is against this, they are not made part of this process.

BRT SYSTEM IF FAILING AND IF YOU DO NOT ALLOW OTHER INDUSTRIES TO ASSIST, YOU WILL BE MAKING THE BIGGEST MISTAKE. YOU ARE NOT READY…. ACCEPT IT AND GET HELP.

I am so sorry to say I am just a first year student who is still battling to pass and on top of that I have to worry about my University fees. I have no financial aid nor bursary what is the goverment doing about that. I see many students who have rich or good finance backgrounds being paid for not me. You know my mother does not work and only my sister tries to support us,glocery,my school fees and put the clothes for everyone in the family.
Right now I am stressed that I may not get my first semester results because she can’t afford to pay this R11229.00 they want. this is not fare on me and my sister because her income is R2500 a month, wha are we to do. i should be sitting at home because of this but I love LOVE studing.
THEREFORE I ASK THE GOV. TO HELP

Dear Mr. President

We are graduate from Tshwane University of Technology completed National Diploma in Correctional Service Management 2008.In October 2009 were called for an interview to work as intern at the Department of Correctional Services (Head Office)Pretoria Central, corner Bosman and Church street, Pythons Building. After five months we were told that the Department will not advertise any post for three years because of the moratorium on post, so we must start applying outside, than now the question was how about us interns who enrolled Correctional Service Management Diploma we have no where to go.Atleast those who did HR, IT and Commercial studies e.t.c stand a good chance outside the department.
Our Managers or Supervisors, I believe they have power to recommend us for permanent placement even if they can place us at a lower post as long as we are inside correctional services because this is the only field of our specialization.
I will really appreciate your help on this matter.
I’m looking forward hearing from you soon. Thank you for your consideration.

Yours sincerely

MR NV SIBEKO

I would like to know how can Legal Aid be up to date with the new childcare Act but our SAP is not? Surely all departments should be up to date on the law? My brother is going through absolute hell trying to see his child as his Fiance abducting his little girl. If the SAP were up to date with the childcare Act then he would not be in this situation.

I have been trying to register my marriage which took place in Germany. I went to the right department at home affairs - waited for 6 weeks - sat in the queue to be told they have no record of the application. After the second time of being told they have no record of the application I got the name of “Pumla” so that I had a contact she gave me a number which I could phone and check the status before I come and sit in the long queue again. Needless to say the number is never answered and when I go to pumla’s office she is ‘out’ or ‘not in today’ I tried to complain on Zuma’s hotline only the hear that the volume is so great that they cannot attend to my call. I got married in Dec 2009 and in August 2010 I am still not registered - have no new ID and am experiencing difficulties changing my name with the various places I need to change my name. What on earth does one do!
