Many residents of Cape Town have been angered already by the proposed liquor bill that the City is proposing. The public has been urged to comment before February 27 on the draft by-law regarding liquor trading days and hours. Some of the significant changes the by-law proposes are that bed and breakfast facilities would be strictly prohibited from selling alcohol. It proposes that guest houses, pubs, clubs and theatres in residential areas could trade in liquor from 11:00 to 21:00, while those in business and industrial areas could trade until 02:00 the next day. Supermarkets would be able to sell wine from 09:00 to 18:00 from Sunday to Monday. Bottle stores, where liquor is not consumed on the premises, would be able to trade from 09:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Saturday. Wine farms, restaurants and guest accommodation in agricultural areas could sell on-site consumption from 11:00 to midnight and off-site consumption from 09:00 to 18:00.

Julius Malema is back in the news and this time with a bit of entertainment. On Wednesday morning, 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s Darren “Whackhead” Simpson pranked the youth leader. Whackhead Pretended to be Barack Obama’s assistant, Todd, and he called Malema’s personal assistant to arrange a conference call between the youth leader and Obama. During the “conference call” conversation, which was broadcast on the station’s breakfast show, Whackhead used sound clips from actual speeches made by Obama to engage Malema in conversation. Thousands of people were left in stiched from laughing when they heard this prank call, and the call has continually being aired and is even available to be heard on the Internet for those that missed it.

Barack Obama will take his place as President of the USA on January 20 this year. Millions of people across the continent of Africa are ecstatic about the election of Barack Obama as America’s next president. Parties were thrown after Obama won the election with many just happy to see ‘one of their’ own taking up the most powerful position in the world. But many also have high expectations after eight years of neglect under the Bush administration. The relationships between Africa and the USA were not that great during the Bush reign and many hope now that Obama is in control the relationships between the USA and Africa will be better. But are things really going to change for Africa now that Obama is President?

ANC President, Jacob Zuma, finds himself back in the spotlight again. I somehow do not think that this man is destined to be South Africa’s next president with all the ‘noise’ surrounding him. Yesterday, the Supreme Court of Appeal upheld an appeal by the National Director of Public Prosecutions against a court ruling that effectively meant that Zuma could still faces charges of corruption, fraud, racketeering and tax evasion. Zuma had thought that all this was over when High Court Judge Chris Nicholson found that Zuma did have the right to make representations before the NDPP decided to re-charge him. But this decision has now been overturned on appeal. In simple terms, this means that Zuma could still go to trial and he is not in the clear yet.

Compliments of the season. Hoping you had a great holiday period and you have started off 2009 on a great note. 2009 is set to be a big year for South Africa and we at InTheNews.co.za are set to bring you all the news that matters straight to you as we see it. Of major note this year will be the Presidential elections to be held in South Africa. Obama will also be taking over as president in the USA and that will be interesting to see how it pans out. We also have the FIFA Confederations Cup taking place in South Africa as a build up to the FIFA World Cup in 2010. On the sporting front we also have the British Lions rugby touring South Africa and Australia cricket also playing in South Africa after we successfully beat them in Australia. We also will be keeping a close eye on the developments in Zimbabwe and hopefully there will be a breakthrough in 2009 for our neighbours.

Wishing you a great 2009 again and thank you for your continued support of InTheNews.co.za .
