Many of us have been wondering why former president, Nelson Mandela, has not said anything or tried to stop the divisions which have been formed in the ANC. The answer is simple, Mandela has steadfastly maintained his public silence on the ructions in the party, with aides repeatedly saying he has retired fully from public life and does not want to be drawn into politics. Fair enough. Mandela has already done a lot for the ANC and subsequently the country and he needs to rest now. It is a pitty that all his hard work over the years is not starting to dwindle.

We already have a break away party from the ANC being formed in the form of COPE. I wonder if Madiba himself thought that he would ever see the day that the ANC has such divisions? The decision by current ANC president, Jacob Zuma to recall Thabo Mbeki must not have sat well with Madiba. I just wonder what Madiba would have said to Zuma with regards to this move.

Could Mandela be the one to heal the wounds within the ANC or it is a bit too late? I feel the damage has already been done and even if Madiba himself comes out now and calls for unity within the party, it may be too late. Maybe if Mandela had said something before COPE was formed there could have been some resolution reached between members of the party. Mandela always seemed to have a way with uniting people together and he would have probably been the only person capable of stopping the ANC from splitting.

But all we can do now is just ask questions of “if this” and “if that” had happened as Mandela has made it clear he wants nothing to do with this current situation. I just wonder who Mandela would side with today, ANC or COPE?

No. These politicians need to grow up. the problem is they have chosen to forget or ignore why we voted them in office, to serve us and abide by the constitution. If Tata steps in now, who,ll take over the role when he is no more. They need to grow up, that,s all

Monde,

It is OK to dream. As they say: dreams can come true. There’s a difference though between ‘realistic’ and ‘pipe’ dreams. Ithink yours falls into the latter category.

The leaders u refer to in your comment are all true ANC stalwarts, not power thirsty individuals who break ranks the moment they r not in powerful positions in the ANC.

Each and everyone of them deserved to hold the post of ANC president. But not all of them did. Only Thambo and Mandela did. Neither of them broke away to form new parties when the democratic process did not go their way. They stayed on and respected that process.

Read the history of the ANC. You will learn that there have bin both clashes in the ANC before. As an example of the latter, Mandela, along with other youth league leaders at the time, defied the resolution of the mother body and adopted what they termed a ‘programme of action’. Thier decision lead to the formation of MK. This however did not result in people jumping ship and forming other parties, they stayed on.

Now, who are in the mould of leaders u refer to, those in the ANC or COPE?

Lastly, when Mandela finally departs this world, he will tell of what has happened to the great ANC. He will tell of the shortcomings of the current ANC. But I belive he will be at haste to tell of leaders who believed they were born to be leaders. And when they realised they were fooling themselves, they broke away. As the great Madiba once said: “One of the characteristic of a great leader is to know when to lead from the front; and when to lead from the back”.

Now who are
