The new political party in South Africa which wants to be called the Congress of the People is under pressure as the ruling ANC party are planning to block the new party from adopting this name. The ANC is taking legal advice on the use of the name Congress of the People because it says that the name, the Congress of the People, is an event in the calendar of the ANC. It’s the function, where in 1955, the Freedom Charter was adopted.

It seems like the ANC is trying by all means to block this new political party lead by Terror Lekota from getting off the ground, starting with just blocking them from getting a name. First, the new party called itself the South African National Congress, but dropped the name after it became clear that the ANC would object. Then they chose the South African Democratic Congress, but was forced to drop it when it discovered that a party of that name had been registered with the Independent Electoral Commission. So now they had opted for the Congress of the People and now even that is going to be debated. Are the ANC being silly about this or they have a valued point?

Maybe they should just settle for “Shikota”!

16 Nov at 23h00 In a news program the presenter had two persons one from The Times and the other from Black Circle. All they did was to joke and laugh about COPE and the DA and this is really not news worthy. I think they should apologise to the people of COPE and the DA.

Is COPE finally what they will be called or we will hearing of another name sooner or later. I think the latter willl be the case, if ANC has anything to do with it.

I honestly believe that COPE is the upcoming defeat against the ANC. The reason the ANC is reacting the way they are about the adoption of the name is due to their fear that COPE is already offering a better ruling over SA than they ever could!

All COPE will achieve in next year’s election will be the right to ‘cope’ with the GOVERNMENT of the ANC, as the DA, UDM and others are doing at present

I am sure the COPE leadership have contingency plans in place if ANC gets it right to have the name blocked. I believe there are W/Cape by-elections that COPE in all its colours are fighting despite the candidates being “Independant” in terms of IEC, because the name is not registered yet.Where there’s a will, there is a way. Bheki - believe me the support is huge, I’m in on the ground level in the Nelson Mandela Metro. Goodbye ANC hello COPE for new hope.

A request that COPE should always have a momment of silence at each gathering to show appreciating for each privillage granted and the establishment of the new party. We are very glad for the courts decision however “Congress of the people” can be a gathering, meeting of people and it can be used as a name of a political party. There is a difference and therefore there is nothing wrong with the name. I can just urge everyone to exercise their rights and vote for a party in favour of the well being of all South Africa and who will practise what they preach.

Bheki on 18 December, 2008 at 12:35 pm

I was disappointed by the court’s decision regarding the use of the phrase ‘Congress of the People’ by Shikota. I still believe that no one party should register it for its sole use. The ANC is correct in saying that the event is part of their history. History books atest to that, and Shikota knows it.
