After last weekends historic victory against New Zealand, the Springboks go face to face with Australia on Saturday in Perth. Coach Peter de Villiers has decided to ring the changes again. The biggest change comes at full back where Percy Montgomery has been dropped and replaced by Conrad Jantjes. Percy does not even make the bench as De Villliers has opted to go with 5 forwards on the bench and only two backline players. Montogomery’s exclusion means that Butch James will take over the kicking duties with Frans Steyn as his deputy. Steyn will start the match in the centre position, replacing the injured Adi Jacobs. Having Steyn in the centre may be a good move in order to combat Australia’s Sterling Mortlock. Australia may have looked to target Jacobs but Steyn may prove to be a harder nut to crack in defence. For many months now, South Africa has been wondering why the country has been plunged into darkness. We have gotten so used to the terms ‘load shedding’ and black outs. Everyone was talking about the electricity crisis, even children who barely new what was happening knew that there was something called Eskom and it was responsible for the loss of electricity in their homes. Now a report has been made which looks into what has actually caused this electricity crisis in South Africa. The report brings together the opinions and recommendations of 50 government leaders and businessmen on the crisis and outlines proposals to resolve it. Read the rest of this entry »

Jabulani Ndaba passed away yesterday after suffering from TB for a very long time. Ndaba was part of the group Malaika which bought us songs such as Destiny. The group has scooped over 15 awards, including the Metro FM, Sama, Kora and Channel O Awards. Due to ill health, Ndaba has been unable to attend several performances in the past couple of months. His last performance was in Australia in January.

InTheNews.co.za would like to pass on its condolences to the Ndaba family. They have truly lost a great musician but he will always be remembered for the great work he put in. Rest In Peace Jabulani.

After the nail biting 30 - 28 victory against New Zealand on Saturday, South Africa are now the number 1 rugby team in the world again. South Africa’s win in New Zealand was their first win in the country in 10 years and bought to an end New Zealand’s 30 game winning record at home. Some have called Saturday’s victory an even sweeter moment than winning the World Cup final.

InTheNews.co.za would like to say congratulations to the Springboks for this historic win. You have made the whole country proud and we hope you can push on from this and win this years Tri-Nations.

Percy Montgomery and JP Pietersen will return to the Springbok starting lineup for the second test against New Zealand in Dunedin on Saturday. This means that we will be seeing the same ‘back three’ that started in the World Cup final; Montgomery, Pietersen and Habana. I feel Conrad Jantjes will be disappointed by being dropped to the bench. He put in a good display in the first test and hardly put a foot wrong. But I guess coach De Villiers is trying something new this time around in his quest to beat the All Blacks. Read the rest of this entry »

Disaster struck the Gautrain yesterday as the tunelling of the Gautrain caused a massive sink hole along one of the cities busiest roads. Oxford Road is a very busy road in Johannesburg and now that there is a 12 metre wide hole in the road. There are set to be some serious traffic problems in that part of the city. The builders of the Gautrain, Bombela, have stopped drilling now after this sink hole was formed. There are concerns as to how this hole was created and if there is a chance that there will be more problems along the way if they continue drilling. Read the rest of this entry »

According to reports in The Guardian this morning, Robert Mugabe is going to remain as the president of Zimbabwe and Morgan Tsvangirai will be the prime minister. Apparently, South Africa’s President, Thabo Mbeki, was in Zimbabwe this past weekend and talked to Mugabe but he did not talk to Tsvangirai as Tsvangirai was not willing to have a meeting at the State House as that would just show that he is accepting Mugabe as the president of the country. Mbeki proposed that Mugabe remain as president whilst Tsvangirai would be prime minister. Read the rest of this entry »

I could not believe my eyes when I saw this new Steers commercial on television! I find this advert to be so inappropriate and I think it should be taken off the air. It verges on the point of nudity and can not be ideal for family viewing. For those of you who have not seen the advert yet; basically it is a screen split into two and on one side they are showing Steers hamburgers and on the other side they are showing half dressed women with a main focus on certain parts of their bodies.

The advert is not only inappropriate for family viewing but also demeaning to women. I am not sure what the advert is trying to prove; is it trying to compare women to hamburgers? Or is it trying to test if people will look at the hamburgers rather than the women?

Yesterday, reports were rife that Zambia’s President, Levy Mwanawasa had passed away in France after suffering a stroke on Sunday before the African Union summit in Egypt. A Johannesburg-based radio station, Talk Radio 702, yesterday quoted a Zambian embassy spokesperson as saying Mwanawasa was dead. Even South Africa’s President, Thabo Mbeki passed on his condolences at a public speech he made only to later make an apology that he was given wrong information and that the Zambian president was actually still alive. I wonder where the news originally surfaced from that Mwanawasa was dead? Read the rest of this entry »

The starting 15 to take on New Zealand on Saturday has been named today by Springbok coach, Peter de Villiers. The biggest surprise comes at number 8, where the coach has opted to start with Joe Van Niekerk ahead of Pierre Spies and Ryan Kankowski. Butch James comes back into the fly-half position in place of Frans Steyn. Some may say that the biggest ‘weakness’ in the Springbok backline will be centre Adi Jacobs. But looking at his opposite number from New Zealand, Conrad Smith, I do not think Jacobs will have many problems against Smith. Maybe against Australia when Jacobs will be up against Sterling Mortlock may we see some problems. Read the rest of this entry »
