According to reports in The Guardian this morning, Robert Mugabe is going to remain as the president of Zimbabwe and Morgan Tsvangirai will be the prime minister. Apparently, South Africa’s President, Thabo Mbeki, was in Zimbabwe this past weekend and talked to Mugabe but he did not talk to Tsvangirai as Tsvangirai was not willing to have a meeting at the State House as that would just show that he is accepting Mugabe as the president of the country. Mbeki proposed that Mugabe remain as president whilst Tsvangirai would be prime minister.
The report goes on to say that Mugabe would remain in power until a new constitution was in place and fresh elections take place. Now it is not clear yet how accurate this report is as Robert Mugabe nor ZANU PF have come out yet to lets us know what they think. All along we have known that Mugabe is willing to speak to the MDC. The question that will remain will be; how much power would Tsvangirai have if he is prime minister? Very little in my view as Mugabe will remain the head of the state. I can not see these two working together after all that has happened between the two. It would take some serious sacrifices by either parties in order for this ‘government of national unity’ to work.
