“MDC leader (opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai) saw this wave of political hurricane coming his way. He is frightened, frightened of the people.” These were the words of Robert Mugabe at a rally this week. This statement comes after Tsvangirai decided to pull out of the runoff vote which is meant to take place tomorrow (27 June). The ruling ZANU PF party is adamant that the vote will go on regardless. What is interesting to note is that, this runoff vote may be outside the law.
“If we follow the Zimbabwe Electoral Act, legally, (opposition leader) Morgan Tsvangirai is the winner, the regime having failed to organise a re-run within 21 days after the election result was released,” said Ross Herbert of the South African Institute of International Affairs. But this seems to have all been forgotten.
President Mugabe is saying Tsvangirai is frightened of loosing the runoff vote and that is why he has decided to pull out. According to ZANU PF, Tsvangirai would have no chance of winning as the people if Zimbabwe ‘want’ ZANU PF to win. Is it possible that Tsvangirai is scared?
