It looks like we are finally set on seeing South Africa’s first 24 hour news channel being launched soon by e.tv. This 24 hour news channel is reported to be built along the lines of CNN, BBC and SKY’s own 24 hour news channels. Having viewed these channels for many years now, one wonders if e.tv is going to be able to pull this off. I certainly hope they can as this would be massive for South Africa.

My first thought was, “Is there that much news happening in South Africa to allow for a 24 hour news channel?” e.tv are going to have to have many reporters, crew and offices across South Africa and the rest of Africa so that they can get as much news as possible across to us. This calls for there being a massive work force behind the success of this new station. One then wonders how much of a budget does e.tv have for this? It must be pretty big to embark on such a campaign. One just hopes that they do not show us repeats of reported news in the late hours. Being 24 hours, there should be living report on the hour every hour.

I certainly hope that e.tv can pull this off. It will be interesting to see come the first if June what we are given. My expectations are seeing a set very similar to that of Sky News and CNN with all the fancy gadgets and screens. The presenters are also going to be critical. I have been watching Sky News for many years and have seen that the presenters have been on the air for many years now, they do not chop and change their presenters and we have gotten used to liking them and recognising them. I am not saying e.tv should replicate the Sky News model but it would be nice to have presenters we get used to and respect. Something that would be nice for e.tv would be a program / person such as Adam Boulton on Sky who gives a great analysis of news, mostly political. A no-holds barred analysis of the politics of South Africa would certainly make good viewing.

A lot of news hinges around sport and it will be interesting to see how e.tv will tackle their sports news. Currently e.tv give a good international sports news update compared to the SABC and I hope they can grow on this to their new 24 hour channel. I hope they get sport news presenter who know what they are talking about!

Good luck e.tv, show us what you are made of.

ii is a wewlcome development for africa

Morne on 3 June, 2008 at 11:41 am

No wonder people are leaving the country, even our local news stations employ non-south africans to do the work. Come on guys surely we have our own South African Talent to do Presenting.

helen White on 12 June, 2008 at 7:45 pm

WHY DO WE NOT HAVE SOUTH AFRICAN PRESENTERS ON OUR NEW ENEWS CHANNEL - AN AMERICAN DOING OUR WEATHER????? ABSOLUTE NONSENSE…..

Pieter Rossouw on 18 June, 2008 at 9:53 am

I have been watching your news regularly and I want to congratulate you on the achievements so far.
However This morning 18-06-2008 at 7.30 I watched and the lady broadcaster was doing very wel and easy to follow. Unfortunately the gentleman was not making the grade. It is very difficult to follow hom as he does not pronounce each word fully. He also tries to read too fast and his frasing is extremely poor. I am sure he is a good person , but please use him in another spot but definately not as newsreader. Maybe he acn take some eloqution lessons For starters he must speak slower.
Thank You and ALL the Best to your Station.

Herlene O'Brien on 20 June, 2008 at 10:04 am

I would just like to thank e-tv for the stunning new weather man,as he adds some spice to the pronounceciation to our boring weather charts we keep seeing on SABC2/3.He at least changed the way we always receive the weather.Come on south africa don’t be so negative,we cant help if our fellow citizens keep running away to other countries to better themselfs somewhere else, bcause they can’t do it in there own country, so who’s fault is that.
Please keep him,his awesome. I can’t wait to get home in order to watch the weather forcast. His nice looking too…..no more boring “eish” weather!!!
Keep it up E

REAMOLEBOGA SEBIDI on 24 June, 2008 at 8:48 pm

the new weather man is the best actualy i dnt hv a word 2 describe him.im 19 yrs of age and he made me add etv news in my daily scadual.he rocks even my dad likes the guy.keep up the good work David.

Florette Zini on 25 June, 2008 at 10:10 am

Big up to e.tv with there news as well as there weather broadcasting I get all excited when it’s time for the weather forecasting the special effects is awesome and I prefer e news to any other. My interest in particular is the new weather guy confessions..I might have a slight crush on him.

I am in Zambia. We only watched enews once on the launch day.Is the channel only for SA.

Pieter Rossouw on 25 July, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Just to inform the sportsreporter Gareth , the pronounciation of the Protea cricketer’s surname is not doooominee. That is an Afrikaans cleric. The pronounciation is …” doemenee”

SHIVITI COMEWELL on 12 August, 2008 at 2:24 pm

WHY YOU AS E-TV CAN’T YOU TAKE SPORTS SHOW FROM SABC COUSE YOU ARE THE NO: 1 IN PRESENTING SPORTS SPECIALLY SOCCER

SHIVITI COMEWELL on 12 August, 2008 at 2:30 pm

E-TV MUST MUST TAKE ALL THE SPORTS SHOWS FROM OTHER CHANNELS BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO PRESENT IT AND I WISH THEM ALL THE BEST IN THEIR NEGOATIONS WITH THE SABC TO TAKE THIS PROGRAM OVER FROM THEM CAUSE THEY ARE FAILING TO DELIEVER IT PROPALLY

crystal on 31 August, 2008 at 5:40 pm

I just want to say i never used to watch the weather as much as i do now,i think the new weatherman is great so give him a break. Its not easy to adapt in another country believe me i was in the states for a long time its not easy!.He is cute and funny and makes the weather much more intresting
so good luck David you doing great

NPC on 19 September, 2008 at 1:23 pm

News channel starting to settle after a poor start….Macintosh in the mornings, very good and professional,7?10 for Mac Maggs just trying to immitate the BBC reporters, 4/10 for maggs, Reddi Direko better on radio but nonethe less up to date with whats going on., The weatherman is the best in the country, no local decent talent despite what some say. Flusk is a bit inexperienced and the sports reporter who tries to put on a british accent without moving hisn lips…aikona, he is a farce.. am watching the other presenters a bit more before i comment.

Sarah Toms on 27 September, 2008 at 7:13 pm

couldn’t agree more about Redi on Radio. Always rated Jeremy though. Flusk was better at cricket than this, certainly the no where near the best.
Who is the sports reporter with a british accent though??

john makelefane on 1 November, 2008 at 9:09 pm

your coverage of political convention led by former anc chair, was outstanding as well as you kept viewers abreast with international news, especially American elections. to me you rate high with channels such as cnn, sky news. keep it up. Jeremy, D. Mphahlele and Direko amandla

Fanie Kruger on 25 November, 2008 at 4:59 pm

The economic indicators shown on the news today is totally wrong!!!

Ganson Govender on 30 November, 2008 at 7:25 pm

The news @ 17H00 30/11/2008 were Belinda Mose is in India without her make up crew and boy did she like she just got out of bed, over weight sad shes so young and does’nt look anything but an international ETV reporter representing South Africa in India she looks like a tea girl. This is going to drop ETV’s ratings badly.

B Robinson on 3 December, 2008 at 11:42 am

Could you ask your weather people to speak more clearly and SLOWLY when doing the weather report. Most people I speak to agree with me.We just cannot follow their reports. Many thanks .

WHAT WAS AIRED ON FRIDAY 12.12.2008 ON NEWS RE LOLLY JACKSON

j karabus on 31 December, 2008 at 8:46 am

I was very dissapointed with Jeremy Mags in last evening’s Palastinian/Israeli debate when, on morethan one occassion, he failed to insist that his questions were answered. Although the questions were good and pertinent he allowed ranting and raving to rule the day.

S Vlismas on 3 January, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Does anyone know if Gareth Edwards-the sports presenter has worked for an overseas tv station? if so where? Im amazed the way he hosts the sport if he is new to tv.

Janette on 4 January, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Well done E News on providing an informative 24 hour news channel which is improving from day-to-day. Generally the presenters are tastefully dressed. However, I have to unfortunately comment on the lady who does the weather. She always wears a dark drab suit and tonight was no exception. A black suit with a dark lilac blouse that does nothing for her, and hair that hangs in no particular style. She is a fantastic presenter, but needs to smarten up her look.

Denise on 6 January, 2009 at 7:15 pm

An English news channel should not be making basic mistakes such as “Whose (sic) to blame”, which was displayed in the captions this evening.

Hasina on 15 January, 2009 at 10:35 pm

i am extreamely dissapointed with etv news late edition. One of the biggest international top stories namely the WAR ON GAZA was not even touched , instead stories about the company Apple and international sportmen receiving fines took precedence over innocent children and women being killed mercilessly. South Africa, with our backround of Apartheid have come a long way and we deserve news thAt is ACCURATE AND OBJECTIVE.Is it the aim of South African news channels to keep South Africans (majority of whom do not have satelite) in the dark of what really goes on around the globe? Please wake up

Yolandi on 20 January, 2009 at 11:02 am

I would just like to say one thing: STOP COMPLAINING, things could’ve been worse! I think Derek is very attractive, smart, entertaining and the best person for the position… South africa has talent - maybe they just hide in parliament, LOL! So please people, calm down - if you want to be a weather reporter so badly - please get a degree… Thanks

Very proffessional. Especially the weather. You can see all the different towns as well as the weather man seems to know his story. Many thanks and well done to the whole team.

Clinton on 23 March, 2009 at 3:45 pm

I think it’s good that e-tv is getting an American to do the weather and it’s not about the race or nationality it’s about who is most suited for the job.

WHY DOES THE NEWS READER ALWAYS MAKE STATEMENTS REFERRING TO WHO WILL BE PRESIDENT !!!!! DOES THE ANC PAY YR SALARY ???? THE ELECTIONS ARE NEXT WEEK DEAR LADY, UNLESS THIS IS ALSO RIGGED !!!! Magda on 23 May, 2009 at 7:47 pm

I am surprised that some people still debate whether Derek should be a weather reporter in South Africa, there are many South Africans working in many key areas all over the world, nobody is complaining over there as far as I know,I have worked in Europe myself and was welcomed.Derek is professional and does his work with passion. And the new man on our screens, Byron Drew is just as effiecient, and, South African to boot! I think ETV has an eye for handsome smart people.

Erica on 28 May, 2009 at 4:38 pm

Enews channel is the most professional news channel! Keep it up! All my sympathies to MacFarlane today as he had to hide his disappointment with Man United’s loss - I felt for you! Firstly, I would like to congratulate Coach Krol for a great display by Pirates vs Cosmos, that match was a marvel to watch as the Skull and Bones cruised. My criticism arise because of the Presenter who presents the morning sport(i.e.after 07:30am). He is very bias and pro-Chiefs and Man.United because if these 2 clubs lose, few visuals will b shown vice versa.

All the people of South Africa Must stand together and oppose the Eskom price increases,We cannot understand how the Government allows Eskom to have their way, They granted the increase at the expense of poor people of this country. This is not acceptable and we the public must stop this, We must hold
President Zuma accountable as no one gets large increases in their salaries, We must NOT pay this new increases as we are still battling to cope with the last increase.

Please inform your favourite viewers like myself on the changes made which led to the dissapearance of your transmissions. If you are now a pay television or any other technological changes we will appreciate to know and cope/adapt.

Chris Muyeye on 26 November, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Your launch on DSTV was wonderful and our expectation was to get news of the region specially SADC but unfortunately each time I tune in there is only news about South Africa. Was this your objective in the first place to put South Africa on the map when you launched.

On Tuesday night I watch 3rd degree when your presenters were talking about “size 0″ for models, while the intention was good this article lacked depth and it did not bring out the exact point. This comes on the backdrop of watching progams like Carte Blanche of Inside Africa on CNN. While I do not want to compare you with these people, I strongly feel that if you are bringing “investigative programs” they must reflect that and bring out some detail. However you did a great job on 3rd degree plus when you exposed the white guy who was abusing street boys, unfortunately the judiciary system in your country is diplorable, how can that guy get away by paying only R10000.

Desray Booysen on 14 December, 2009 at 3:37 pm

Hi there
We really enjoy the e-news channel and find most of your presenters very professional and well spoken. However, we have a problem with
Kershnee Govender. While we think she is very sweet her pronounciation is just not up to standard and we feel she should certainly not be working as an upfront e-news presenter. When she is presenting we always quickly change to another channel. We would ask that the head of your dept takes time to just listen to her and decide whether they think she fits in with the high standard of the other e-news presenters
Many thanks for your attention to this matter
Desray Booysen

Mr CJ van Rooyen on 3 April, 2010 at 10:04 pm

Eugene Terreblanche was murdered

Piet van Waveren on 4 April, 2010 at 11:32 am

Piet Makwas on 4 April, 2010 at 12:17 pm

There is a time and place for everything in life… that’s a Biblecal principal and also very relevant in our everyday life.
Sure the ANC struggle songs had their place during the struggle years of Apartheid and they did achieve their coals. The ANC is the governing party today and Apartheid is dead. Why do they still have to sing “Shoot the Boer, Shoot the farmer”?
These songs might be to keep their support base up and alive because by the looks of it the ANC leadership is losing their support and popularity amongst their supporters.

Mike grey on 4 April, 2010 at 1:45 pm

All the focus is on Eugene Terreblache’s murder what about the over 3000 farm attacks in south africa. Farmers are starting to get fed with farm attacks. I tpersonaly think more attention should be given to farm attacks and more investigations. into the matter. The government has ignored the issue for so long now the bubble has burst and everyone’s life is a thread. More attantion should also be given to hate speach on social groups like facebook. With Malema out there and the far wright wing this will course race disruptions and a threat to everyones peace and family.

Stong investigations should be looked in at farm attacks.

Every 1.8 days a farmer is murdered now this is the cherry on the top.

What sadens me is that it had to take a person like Eugene Terreblance to get murdred before this serious problem got real media attention. What abot the more innocent 3000 farmers both men and woman that got murdered. I think they also need just as much media attention

Piet Mostert on 5 April, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Malema stuck his neck out , while the goverment shuts their mouth. So now the consequinces have to be dealt with. Didn’t you know that you have been in power since 1994? Is there then still a need for the stuggle songs ?

Rioma on 5 April, 2010 at 7:15 pm

Etv yr reporters and interviewers r creating absolute drama and soliciting and inciting parties to violence with yr ridiculous line of questioning almost insisting there is an Impending war is afoot even when all parties insist there is calm. U r creating sensational drama especially j maggs. Come now stop pushing for sensation and report with out a preconceived outcome . Zuma shud restrict yr silly methodology

Oupa on 7 April, 2010 at 9:24 pm

I watched with dismay how the Secretary of the AWB threatening a Political Analyst in the studio. If he can do that in front of the SA, Africa and whole world, what about at his farm where he is all and sundry?

Before you can notice that, one will be towed with a 4by4 vehicle and that will be finshed with you. Hence he said he is not finished with this poor lady

They were almost not being there in the political arena up until now.

Viva ANC

khotso on 8 April, 2010 at 8:33 am

it is interesting to note that non of the prominent newspaopers is carrying the awb e-nesws story prominently , is it because a black woman was at the receiving end of white superiority ?

Ben on 8 April, 2010 at 4:22 pm

It is clear that eNews intentionally orchestrated a situation that could be sensationalised to their own benefit. The appearance of impartiality is more important than its practice in the liberal media. How many times have this mechanism not been used to skew opinions, by extending context beyond the delimitated debate one party is negatively perceived (why are you not concerned with the poor and the hungry?). It is the role of the host or interviewer to make sure that participants in debates do not stray from their subject matter. Unfortunately, deliberately or due to ignorance and/or incompetence, this is seldom the case. Not to mention the mindless verbal diarrhea spouted by individuals “educated” through their exposure to years and years of liberation ideology.

Yolandi on 9 April, 2010 at 6:48 am

People, lets face it - it doesn’t matter if we are white, african, coloured or whatever - none of us are safe anymore… We got called stupid yesterday by an african man because he made a mistake - this is acceptable because it is accepted by the ANC? More so because Malema uses this language? If we call an african person stupid - we get called racists? Long live E.T, he suffered a terrible death. One more thing - 1994, I though (and I know I am not alone) apartheid stopped - I thought we all joined together as one nation? Yah right - guess I was wrong!!!!

Lawrence on 13 April, 2010 at 1:48 pm

Your comment is awaiting moderation.??
What’s the problem - Cannot take criticism about your wonder girl Deborah Patta?

jackie scheepers on 19 April, 2010 at 7:50 am

One more thing, we are 16 years down the lane, STILL NO END IN SIGHT. RACISM IS HIGH ON THE PRIORITY LIST. LOOK AT malema FUELING IT ON. HE IS THE BIGGEST OF US ALL. HE IS ONE BIG JOKE TO SOUTH AFRICA

Oupa on 19 April, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Yeah racism is alive and kicking let us not bury our heads in the sand and pretent that everything is honcky dory.

You can cut it with a knife the way how thick it is.

Lets have a platform whereby all rainbow people of our country could come and debate this monster (Racism) robustly once and for all and pave a way forward for all of us in SA

mama on 19 April, 2010 at 5:28 pm

I watched the news last week and the weekend. Want to know what did the 34year old lady expected if she smuggels drugs into a country. How many lives would have been destoyed by the 3kg. Now her parents want her back alive. She new if she was caught, she would have to pay the ultimate price.
No2. Why did’nt minister Cele said the day of the murder that there was semen found on terre’blance’s body, why did he keep quiet, now 2 weeks later it is published. Just another concerned citizen of our country. Hope the government wake up to reality

Ginger on 19 April, 2010 at 9:01 pm

Maybe the poor lady was blinded by either greed/her financial status to think rationally of the results of her actions.

This need to be our focus(drugs & results) especially to the young members of our society.

I am one of the millions of people who have been watching etv in Nigeria for many years. Just last year the channel became scrambled. Please help me to start watching it again. Without etv, free to air channels are incomplete. I will appreciate it if you send me your new frequency. Thank you.

Clement Ikezue on 22 May, 2010 at 5:03 am

I want to further add that etv has no comparison. It is by far better than most of the pay tv channels I have seen. It is the best for people like me who would always want to watch free to air channels especially etv. I am using 4669x strong receiver, I am lookong forward to hearing from you.

jacob afugba on 12 July, 2010 at 2:58 pm

anonymus on 28 July, 2010 at 4:54 pm

I think Julius Malema is one of the best politicians ever, he is outspoken, not afraid and he is a front stabber. He is more of a nation builder than hellen ziro.
