The speculation is rife at this moment in time in Zimbabwe. Many different reports are emanating out of the country with regards to what is going to happen. Some circles suggest that there has been a meeting between the current ruling party, ZANU PF, the opposition, MDC, and the army about putting together an exit package for current president, Robert Mugabe to leave his position and allow MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai to take over. Whether there is any truth in this, it is anyones guess. But all parties concerned have denied that such a meeting has taken place. Yesterday, Morgan Tsvangirai appeared for a press conference and said that he would not declare himself the winner of the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections until the official results were announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). This is a rhetorical question, which you probably expect me to say that Zimbabwe will remain the same as Robert Mugabe will remain president with a majority in parliament and the MDC will contest the elections saying they were rigged, they will go to court and people will riot for a bit and all is bad will end bad, right? Well, I am sure you are tired of the media overload on the Zimbabwean Elections but before we leave this and go onto the obvious fall out when the results are officially released I would like to weigh in with my thoughts on the elections.
Thought Number 1: Wow! The Zimbabwean Electoral Commission (ZEC) seemed very professional. The pictures on SABC Africa and Al Jazeera showed a somewhat well organised voting system. Al Jazeera actually showed the whole voting process from beginning to end, they had that kind of access.
