This must one of the longest and hardest waits Zimbabwe has ever had to experience. Everyone is still waiting for the results of the Zimbabwe presidential vote. Surely it can not take this long to total up votes that were conducted on Saturday. This is a clear sign that something is going on behind the scenes.

A million thoughts already race through my mind with regards to what could be going on. My thoughts are that, the opposition MDC have won the presidential vote and the ruling ZANU PF party does not know what to do! So they are busy strategising in their offices on how best to deal with this loss. There is said to be a politburo meeting today for ZANU PF where I am sure they are going to be bashing their heads together trying to figure out how to remain in power. If you ask me, this is a waste of time. The whole world knows that ZANU PF has lost and there is nothing they can do about it. If Mugabe had won do you think we would be waiting this long to hear the results?

Now there is also talk that there will be a run off between Mugabe and Tsvangirai as none of them would have won the vote by more than 50%. The question then remains, would Mugabe be keen on a run off which in all likelihood he would loose or would he accept defeat in order to avoid the humiliation? Who knows what is going through the 80 year old leaders mind? There is also suggestion that Mugabe has been ‘told’ by other SADC leaders that he should give up the race peacefully and accept defeat. He has not seemed to listen to these leaders for the past years, why all of a sudden would he listen to them now?

The way I see this panning out is that, the presidential results are going to be announced and there will be no outright winner. This would mean there would have to be a run off between Mugabe and Tsvangirai. This run off vote will take place and Tsvangirai will win. ZANU PF are going to try by all means to get their leader to win but if the peoples votes are heard, there is no way Mugabe can win a run off against Tsvangirai.

What has been interesting is how quiet Simba Makoni has been. It seems like the other candidate for the presidency has been ruled out of the race at this stage. But suggestions are that if Tsvangirai does become the new president of Zimbabwe, a role can be found for Simba Makoni. There is no doubting Makoni would be a good addition to the team tasked with rebuilding Zimbabwe. And my hat goes off to him for standing up against Mugabe. Not many people have been brave enough to do that.

We just have to continue to wait to find out what will happen in Zimbabwe. An old adage says, “Good things come to those that wait.” Let us hope this will apply to Zimbabwe.
