The speculation is rife at this moment in time in Zimbabwe. Many different reports are emanating out of the country with regards to what is going to happen. Some circles suggest that there has been a meeting between the current ruling party, ZANU PF, the opposition, MDC, and the army about putting together an exit package for current president, Robert Mugabe to leave his position and allow MDC leader, Morgan Tsvangirai to take over. Whether there is any truth in this, it is anyones guess. But all parties concerned have denied that such a meeting has taken place. Yesterday, Morgan Tsvangirai appeared for a press conference and said that he would not declare himself the winner of the country’s presidential and parliamentary elections until the official results were announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

The tone of his voice and upbeat mood through out that televised press conference showed the signs of a man who knows he is victorious. I guess he is now just waiting for the ZEC to declare him the new president of Zimbabwe thus signaling the end of a 28 year reign by Mugabe. But somhow I do not think it is going to be that easy!

Why would Mugabe, after all these years just accept that he has lost? And especially loosing to the man that he said would never rule the country in his lifetime? A commentator said, “You can never get rid of a dictator democratically” Which is true to some extent. And thus the reason I can not see Mugabe giving up his power so easily. I am 100% sure that the majority of Zimbabwe wants to see Mugabe go and if Mugabe truly wants to see a better Zimbabwe then he should accept the peoples wishes and step down.

What would be interesting is to see what will happen to Mugabe if he does leave his office? Will he stay in Zimbabwe or would he go into exile in one of his ‘friends’ country’s? I personally do not think he would be able to stay in Zimbabwe as he would be trialled for all the ‘bad’ that he has done over the years and he could just find himself behind bars.

Today could be an important day in the history of Zimbabwe. A new leader maybe declared or it maybe the beginning of another 5 years of leadership under Robert Mugabe. We hope the presidential results are announced today so people know what they are dealing with.

The reason all this is taking too long is because ZANU have a lot of ‘furniture’ to move out and teh exterminators still need to fumigate so that Tsvangirai moves in smoothly!!!!
