Does Bafana Bafana seem to be jinxed? Nothing seems to ever go right for the South Africa National soccer team. It is no secret that the team has not been performing well over the last couple of years. Many players and coaches have come but the team has failed to deliver the goods on an international scale as compared to their fellow countrymen on the rugby field, cricket pitch, swimming pool and golf course. With South Africa having won the right to host the Soccer World Cup in 2010 it was only right for the country to go all out and try deliver a winning team for the tournament. The first task was to appoint a word class coach to help the team, up step the Brazilian Carlos Alberta Perreria. After a long time of negotiating to secure the services of the coach and after offering a multi million Rand salary, SAFA got their man and everyone was excited. Read the rest of this entry »
The drama in Zimbabwe seems to continue. Now there is a ship wondering around the oceans of Africa with tonnes of weapons and ammunition meant to be delivered to Zimbabwe. It seems that Mugabe is scrambling around to get as much ‘fire power’ together to help protect himself and his troops and at the same time use those weapons to start terrorising Zimbabweans in the build up to a potential presidential vote run off. Imagine politics was an animal documentary show on Animal Planet or National Geographic Wild. How would the documentary on the pending incorporation of The Scorpions into the South African Police Service (SAPS) look like? Well it would be a tale of how the Big Crime Fighting Scorpion used to inject deadly venom into the wild crime savannah land that is South Africa and then the political hyenas of the bad lands came and tried to crush the Big Crime Fighting Scorpion because it was too good at catching criminals, especially criminals from the hyena bad lands. Unfortunately for the Big Crime Fighting Scorpion the hyenas had powerful friends in the heartland of the Savannah government who also turned against it on the Big Crime Fighting Scorpion. The Big Crime Fighting Scorpion was left alone and the political hyenas and vultures are devouring the Big Black Crime Fighting Scorpion who can’t use its venom against them because the Savannah government has taking away the venom. Once upon a time in a far, far away galaxy lived a Dark Lord who was so powerful he fooled people into never attacking him or trying to speak against him. This Dark Lord lived through some good time but many bad times, with some out of his control but the latest bad times were all his doing. He took the people of his beautiful planet hostage and cast a spell on the powerful king in the surrounding planet not to ever attack him in public. This powerful king was quoted on Sunday saying that the Dark Lord’s planet had no problems. This sounds like an episode of Star Trek: Next Generation but this is the real life political soap opera that is the Zimbabwean Election 2008 and the aftermath. The new story plot line being Thabo Mbeki, President of South Africa saying that there was no crisis in Zimbabwe. Read the rest of this entry »
It seems like there is a lot going around in the news these days. If it’s not Zimbabwe then it’s the rising interest rates, or the electricity situation. Funny enough Jacob Zuma has not been making the headlines lately! Today I am going to talk about the electricity problems being faced in South Africa. Should the electricity tariffs be allowed to go up by over 50% or should be be content with blackouts for the foreseeable future? Read the rest of this entry »
I could not believe the headline of the Sunday Times yesterday. “Crisis? What Crisis?” How can President Thabo Mbeki honestly believe that there is no crisis in Zimbabwe? Is the non release of results of the presidential election results not a crisis? It was been two weeks now and still there is no word on who the president of Zimbabwe is going to be. If this is not a crisis then i do not know what is. Wikipedia defines a crisis as: A crisis (plural: crises) may occur on a personal or societal level. It may be a traumatic or stressful change in a person’s life, or an unstable and dangerous social situation, in political, social, economic, military affairs, or a large-scale environmental event, especially one involving an impending abrupt change. More loosely, it is a term meaning ‘a testing time’ or ‘emergency event’. Read the rest of this entry »
Yesterday, the South Africa Reserve Bank governor announced that interest rates would be raised by 50 basis points meaning that the prime interest rate that we borrow money from the banks goes up to 15%. If this is not torture then I do not know what is. It is said by some that the increase in the rates is a way to try control inflation which is running away into the sunset. There is no denying the fact that inflation in South Africa has to be controlled but is the Central Banks target of having inflation being between 3 - 6% realistic? Read the rest of this entry »
The whole world is still waiting for the Zimbabwe election results but why the delay? Now the MDC have filed an application to the high court to get the results to be released but it looks like that application is going to be thrown out the window and we will be no closer to knowing the results. I have my own thought as to why these results are not being released and I do not think Mugabe is to blame for all of this. Read the rest of this entry »
This is a brief Idiots Guide to African Elections Stealing and/or Rigging. This brief will focus on how to effectively usurp democracy and people’s will while acting like you are not doing it and telling the world that the elections were free and fair. This must one of the longest and hardest waits Zimbabwe has ever had to experience. Everyone is still waiting for the results of the Zimbabwe presidential vote. Surely it can not take this long to total up votes that were conducted on Saturday. This is a clear sign that something is going on behind the scenes.
A million thoughts already race through my mind with regards to what could be going on. My thoughts are that, the opposition MDC have won the presidential vote and the ruling ZANU PF party does not know what to do! So they are busy strategising in their offices on how best to deal with this loss. Read the rest of this entry »
