The Minister of Education, Naledi Pandor, today released the proposed school oath which is meant to be recited every morning by school children across South Africa. Personally I think this is a good idea and it has been long overdue. The oath the minister read out today is now open for public comment. People could comment about the content, suitability and the language the oath is in.

It will be interesting to see how people from across the country react to this oath. But the minister is expecting not much resistance from anyone. But as we all know, not everything goes as smoothly as thought.

The pledge reads as follows:

“We the youth of South Africa, recognising the injustices of our past, honour those who suffered and sacrificed for justice and freedom.”

“We will respect and protect the dignity of each person, and stand up for justice.”

“We sincerely declare that we shall uphold the rights and values of our Constitution and promise to act in accordance with the duties and responsibilities that flow from these rights.”

What do you think about this oath?

OATH – Now, and again, does this government show their true colors!!! That IT’S nature is that of a satanic beast by trying to indoctrinate our children to force them to take an oath to underwrite their political agendas

How must our government expect children to uphold a constitution when it seems to be under another revision to suit a cotrrupt ministers needs?

Leave our children out of the national-socialist ideologies. As it is the white minority is prejudiced against because of their white skins.

“recognising the injustice of our past” come on blacks killed whites long ago and then whites killed blacks and now it start all over.got nothing to do with kids and schools. they cant even read these days and if they fail they strike

I don’t mind teh children saying an oath that relates to their conduct at school and is totally free of any political agenda. Look at the one at The Agassi Academy. It teaches kids to respect, school, teachers and themselves irrespective of who they are or who their parents vote for!

Schaun on 21 February, 2008 at 5:16 pm

cant agree more Sue.but is our kids old enough for an oath.i cant remember my primary school oath. and today i still dont care. my parents tought me to learn and not to sing a long.

Shame Naledi.
The day that happens you will grow wings and fly. You will not have our support. The children would rather sing Dela Rey that to say that stupid pledge.

I will not have my child get involved with politics before she can even understand what it means. I will not have my child brainwashed to believe that she too must constantly feel guilty for Apartheid.
If this pledge is instituted, I will look for a school where it is not recited and if I can’t find one here, I’ll look for one abroad.
Children should be left out of politics!

Is this “oath” meant for black kids as well and if so………why?????????

Linsay 13 on 17 May, 2008 at 3:59 pm

why an “oath”, what are they scared of? I’m a scholar myself and I wasn’t born in the apartheid era so I don’t even know what the heck their goal is with this “oath”.. I disagree with the whole story.
