It seems like there is no getting rid of the power problems in South Africa anytime soon and it seems that South Africa is not the only country in Africa suffering from these problems. Last night (21 January), there was a power failure at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) soccer tournament in Ghana. The game between Mali and Benin was delayed for a couple of minutes when the flood lights failed. The first thought that cam to my mind when that happened was, “I hope the same does not happen in 2010.”

So much work and effort is going into having a successful World Cup in 2010 in South Africa, but will the power problems we are currently facing in South Africa be rectified in time for this great football show piece in 2010. I always think to myself that, most people think that 2010 is ‘the time’ but we should not forget that South Africa is also hosting the Football Confederations Cup in 2009 as a build-up to the 2010 World Cup. The Confederations Cup is equally as important as it is a great preparation for 2010. So in essence all the critical systems that have to be in place for 2010 have to be ready in 2009. So that means, the electricity problems have to be sorted out by next year!
