I would firstly like to thank InTheNews.co.za for giving me this opportunity to air my views. I feel it is a matter which is overlooked and not too many people pay attention to it or those that ‘matter’ have no idea what is going on. Lots of people travel in their own cars around South Africa today and they complain about the price of fuel and traffic, which they have every right to! I am a normal citizen who travels but minibus taxi’s every day to work. Last week I used to pay R4 for a trip and on Monday I am now being told that, that same trip will now cost me R5. therandtoday16.jpgToday, mines resumed production after Eskom had shutdown power to mines last week. This shutdown had caused a lot of chaos in the South African economy as mining plays such a critical part of the economy. The mines now have 80% electricity and they hope to have 90% power by the end of the week.

The electricity situation in South Africa has been as a national emergency and calls have been made for the government to explain why this crisis has happened and what it was not prevented. Read the rest of this entry »

Is this the beginning of the end? I was in total shock when I heard that Eskom has told mines in South Africa to shutdown their mines for between two and six weeks. This all in an effort to conserve the little power that South Africa currently has. Businesses of all sizes have been suffering over the last couple of weeks in South Africa due to the continued power cuts. Now the mining sector which is a huge contributor to the South African economy is now also starting to be hit hard. Eskom’s reasoning is that they can not guarantee power to the mines and do not want to run the risk of the mines having a power cut when miners are down in the mines. Read the rest of this entry »

It seems like there is no getting rid of the power problems in South Africa anytime soon and it seems that South Africa is not the only country in Africa suffering from these problems. Last night (21 January), there was a power failure at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) soccer tournament in Ghana. The game between Mali and Benin was delayed for a couple of minutes when the flood lights failed. The first thought that cam to my mind when that happened was, “I hope the same does not happen in 2010.” Read the rest of this entry »

In light of the power shortages currently being experienced in South Africa, Eskom announced on Sunday (20 January) that it has stopped supplying electricity to neighbouring countries. Eskom supplied electricity to Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe. Many feel that this should have been done long ago to help South Africa conserve the all the electricity they have for their own domestic consumption. Read the rest of this entry »

Today South Africa faces an electricity crisis. Just yesterday, I had a two hour long power cut during the day and as a result I was not able to get much work done. Eskom come out and tell us that they are going to cut the power but what we want to hear is how they are planning to solve this problem which seems to be getting worse and worse. It is the start of the new year and some things are set to continue into 2008. Eskom announced today that there will be continued power cuts across the country this week. The power cuts could be up to two and a half hours long each and some places my experience up to two power cuts a day. Read the rest of this entry »

After a long wait, Peter de Villiers was appointed the new coach for the Springboks yesterday. After Jake White quite after leading South Africa to the world title last year, everyone was waiting to see who would fill the boots of one of the toughest jobs in South Africa if not one of the toughest in the world.

After much deliberation,  SARU decided to go with de Villiers who also becomes the first person of colour to be the head coach of South Africa’s national rugby team. Read the rest of this entry »

It seems like SAFA (South Africa Football Association) has avoided another embarrassment after they and the players reached an agreement over player incentives for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ghana later on this month. It had seemed as if the players were not happy with what SAFA was proposing to them and there could have been a possibility of the players not wanting to play in the tournament. One can only imagine what damage this would have caused for the country and how it would have looked in the leaded up to 2010. Read the rest of this entry »
